It’s been a crazy couple of weeks. Things are going fast and furious at work. Of course I can’t talk about it here {who was the genius that though having a working mom blog would be a great idea when I can only talk about the “mom” part…} but a lot is going on in preparation for a national campaign launch in a few weeks and there are a handful of trips on the horizon.
So in true Emily fashion, when I’m up to my eyeballs, I go into overdrive with productivity. Completely the opposite of relaxing. And probably something that should be addressed.
Moving on. Here’s what we did today:
1. Master Bedroom DIY Artwork
Using this and this as inspiration, I picked up three 24″ x 30″ canvases, two cans of spray paint, painter’s tape, glue and several sizes of washers.
For the “G” washer art, I spray painted the canvas {green} and the washers {a dark metallic color} – but you don’t necessarily have to. Whatever works for your room. After maneuvering the washers into the exact spot I wanted, each one was glued into place.
For the geometric art, I spray painted each canvas a bronze color. Once it was dry, I put the painter’s tape in place and spray painted it green to match the “G” art.
I’m very happy with how everything turned out. The pictures make it look much darker than it really is, FYI. For all three pieces, it was less than $70. PS – Buy a mask. I have a splitting headache from all the fumes. That stuff is STRONG!
2. Black Cat Banner
Because we don’t have enough Halloween decorations up at our house {kidding.}, I made a black cat banner inspired by a Halloween cat Avery brought home from school this past week.
I used it as a template for 13 black construction paper cats. I hole-punched eyes on each cat’s face and two holes in each cat’s back. Avery threaded Halloween ribbon through the two back holes and I hung it on our stair railing.
3. Halloween Rice Krispie Treats
Daddy and the kids made three batches of Rice Krispie treats – plain, chocolate {with chocolate chips and Cocoa Krispies} and orange {plain + orange food coloring}. Then they cut them up using cat, pumpkin and ghost cookie cutters.
{getting the cookie cutter wet between cutouts worked best for us}
4. Cheered on the HAWKEYES to a victory!!

Kinnick Stadium was all decked out and it looked awesome on TV. They somehow coordinated the clothing of each of the 75,000 fans in attendance. How is that even possible?? I can’t even coordinate the clothing of my two children. But us Iowans sure do know how to follow directions.
Nolan was dancing around the living room with me each time the marching band played the fight song. “GO CAWKEYES!” he says.
So that’s a wrap. If you want any specifics for any of the projects above, email me or post a note on the Out of Sick Days Facebook page.
